Friday, 18th of July 2014: ongoing roller coaster…
After leaving hospital last night at 8 for the first night, I came back this morning 9:30 hoping for the best….unfortunately Luka spiked again throughout night to temperatures above 40 degrees a few times. When I came in, he still was asleep, cheeks bright red and obviously febrile (fiebrig). First thing I got to know from the nurses is, that we will have ultrasounds (Ultraschall von Bauch und Unterleib) of his abdomen and tummy to check if there are any signs of causes for the fever…causes could be inflammations, fungus, metastasis……(Entzuendungen, pilzinfektionen Oder Metastasen). Next thing I got to know is that all viral tests of the last days came back negative. On top Luka complained about pain in his lymph nodes under his ear…and this area is quite swollen….To sum this up: since we can not detect any kind of viral infection we need to rule out relapse of leukemia and spreading of the Ewing sarcoma (da keine viralen infekte nachgewiesen werden konnten muessen wir nun zu erst mal ausschliessen das die Leukaemie Oder der knochenkrebs zurück ist) It is by far more difficult to get certainty of a viral infection than to rule out the worst. Since we all know that Luka has been going through these diseases in the past we simply need to check this out at this point and this is a possilbility that is not to be neglected
….not exactly what I would possibly have expected this morning, and to be honest, it almost broke me down after being brave for such a long time…all our plans to go back to Germany literally disappeared into nowhere shortly before we were to leave…… but if we can’t travel with Luka we won’t go nowhere!!!
Luckily there is family and even though we used their shoulders so often to shift the burden they are still holding up…as well the hospital has wonderful therapists who will lead you back to track, and this is what we did!!!!
After the ultrasounds came back ’negative‘ which means good for us, no obvious metastasis or other defects we slowly started to relax a bit. It is a very tense overall situation and we will try to figure out how we will deal with all of this over the weekend. If Luka’s high temperature doesn’t stop until Tuesday we will have to have intensive examinations such as bone marrow aspiration, bone scan and MRI to rule out the worst (Knochenmarkspunktion, Knochenszintigraphie und Kernspin um das schlimmste auszuschliessen). We need to know where the temperature comes from in order to get it under control ! So this means we might have to stay much longer if the temperature doesn’t go down. No problem at all but then we will have to move into a flat near hospital to have a ’nest‘ for the family. So we have time left until Monday to decide what we will have to do.
The good news is that we will cancel all these examinations on Wednesday if the temperature comes back to normal…..without being to overexcited, just stating the truth….since 3:30 this afternoon his temperature came down to 36…. And when I last spoke to Karsten at 10p.m. tonight it was still holding up……no need to tell you more about my roller coaster today!!!
Thanks to all the friends and family who made our life so much easier today !!!! You know who I mean 😉
Won’t even correct the text now….will go straight to bed !!!!!!
just read your latest blog. Very happy to hear that Luca is feeling better (and so is mum). Happy happy birthday to Mika. We were in torrential rain yesterday while thousands of cyclists came down Sheen Lane.
Hope you get settled quickly, and the children meet with new special friends.
Your successors moved in but are obviously on holiday. York Avenue quiet in August. My boys gone til December – Ben to uni, Michael to India. Enjoy yours.
Best from number 23. xx
